Aloha, welcome to the Modern Purl Stripes Beanie and Cowl! You can find the kit available at Lion Brand Yarn. This is a free pattern and a low-cost PDF if available in my Shop and Ravelry.  

The Modern Purl Stripes Beanie and Cowl is a knit pattern inspired to provide texture with a pop of color. Created to keep you warm and stylish, this set is sure to be a lovely addition to your outfits.

 I loved working with Woolspun Yarn which is out of the Vault for a limited time. The color options are gorgeous and if you get a kit you can choose your colors!

Sizes:

  • Hat: Adult
  • Cowl: One Size

Gauge: 

14 sts = about 4 in. (10 cm) in k1, p1

Abbreviations:   

  • p = purl
  • k = knit
  • k2tog = knit 2 stitches together
  • rep(s) = repeat(s)
  • st(s) = stitch(es)
  • tog = together

Finished Measurements:   

  • Hat
    • Finished Circumference About 19 in. (48 cm), will stretch to fit a range of sizes.
    • Finished Height About 7.5 in. (19 cm)
  • Cowl
    • Finished Circumference About 28 in. (71 cm)
    • Finished Height About 10 in. (25.5 cm)

 

Special Explanation:

  • k2tog (knit 2 stitches together) insert right needle into 2 sts knitwise and knit them tog – single right-leaning decrease.

Notes:

    • Hat and cowl are worked in one piece in the round and beginning at lower edge.

HAT 

Using A and 16 in (40.5 cm) circular needles, cast on 66 sts.

Place marker for beg of rnd. Join by knitting the first st on the left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle and being careful not to twist sts.

Lower Band

Rnds 1-8: *K1, p1; rep from * around.

You don’t need to cut A between color changes, just carry the unused color along the inside of the Hat.

Body

Join B.

Rnd 1: Knit.

Rnds 2-3: Purl. Fasten off B

With A.

Rnds 4-6: Knit.

Join C.

Rnd 7: Knit.

Rnds 8-9: Purl. Fasten off C.

With A.

Rnd 10: Knit.

Rnd 11: *K9, k2tog; rep from * around. (60 sts)

Rnd 12: Knit.

Join D.

Rnd 13: Knit.

Rnds 14-15: Purl. Fasten off D.

With A.

Rnd 16: Knit.

Rnd 17: *K8, k2tog; rep from * around. (54 sts)

Rnd 18: Knit.

Join B.

Rnd 19: Knit.

Rnds 20-21: Purl. Fasten off B.

With A.

Rnd 22: Knit.

Rnd 23: *K7, k2tog; rep from * around. (48 sts)

Rnd 24: Knit.

Join C.

Rnd 25: Knit.

Rnds 26-27: Purl. Fasten off C.

Shape Top of Hat

With A.

Next Rnd: Knit

Next Rnd: *K10, k2tog; rep from * around. (44 sts)

Next Rnd: Knit.

Next Rnd: *K9, k2tog; rep from * around. (40 sts)

Next 2 Rnds: Knit.

Cut yarn, leaving a long yarn tail. Thread tail through remaining sts and pull to close opening at top of Hat. Knot securely.

Finishing:

Following package directions, make 1 pom-pom with D. Tie pom-pom to top of hat.

Weave in yarn ends.

 

COWL

Using A and 24 in (61 cm) circular needles, cast on 98 sts.

Place marker for beg of rnd. Join by knitting the first st on the left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle and being careful not to twist sts.

Beginning Border

Rnds 1-5: *K1, p1; rep from * around.

You don’t need to cut A between color changes, just carry the unused color along the inside of the Scarf.

Body

Join B.

Rnd 1: Knit.

Rnds 2-3: Purl. Fasten off B

With A.

Rnds 4-6: Knit.

Next Rnds: Join C, rep Rnds 1-6.

Next Rnds: Join D, rep Rnds 1-6.

Next Rnds: Join B, rep Rnds 1-6.

Next Rnds: Join C, rep Rnds 1-6.

Next Rnds: Join D, rep Rnds 1-6.

Next Rnds: Join B, rep Rnds 1-6.

Next Rnds: Join C, rep Rnds 1-3.

Ending Border

With A.

Rnds 1: Knit.

Rnds 2-6: *K1, p1; rep from * around.

Bind off.

Finishing:

Weave in yarn ends.
